It is important to go for quality when choosing books for toddlers, just as you would for older children.

10 qualities to look for in a good toddler book

  • an affirming message
  • nice illustrations with lots of details
  • text that isn’t dumbed down to be appropriate for the targeted age
  • fun themes
  • happy tone
  • pleasant to read aloud
  • sized right for little hands
  • sturdiness
  • smooth edges
  • entertainment value will keep toddlers engaged and wanting to revisit their books again and again

Happy Birthday to You

Even young children understand the importance of birthdays! They anticipate the excitement and celebration as the festivities draw near no matter whose birthday is being celebrated. But, they especially appreciate being celebrated and recognized themselves. Happy Birthday to You! by Michelle Medlock Adams is a cute sturdy board book with a musical feature. It celebrates the birthday child and all that is special about him. This book features the preparations for a special birthday with bright colors and a loving tone.

There is even a special dedication page at the end with a frame for inserting a picture of your own birthday child. And, they can sing along with the birthday song at the press of a button. Note: The sound feature contains a battery compartment. Young children should be supervised with this book.

God Made You Just Right

God Made You Just Right by Jill Roman Lord celebrates the uniqueness of a child. It’s reassuring message shows young readers that they are specially created to be just who they are. The rhyming words are fun to read aloud and just as fun to listen to, as little ones will enjoy doing as they study the cute details in the illustrations.

The children in the story are featured doing active happy things that young children will recognize, like blowing bubbles and playing dress-up. The soothing colors and happy scenes of children lovingly caring for their pets, playing, cooking, caring for others, and snuggling set the tone for this book and reinforce the verse from Jeremiah 29:11 featured at the end.

The publisher provided review copies of these titles.
