A Biography Book for New Readers
The Story of Harriet Tubman: A Biography Book for New Readers is a colorfully illustrated introduction to this courageous leader. It is written simply, with short chapters and lots of sidebars and pictures. This book is just right for young readers who are ready to move beyond simple picture books.
Non-fiction is a wonderful genre for young readers. This biography of Harriet Tubman does an excellent job of covering her life and inspiring readers. The book includes a timeline of her life events throughout the chapters. It also explains the plight of slaves during Harriet Tubman’s lifetime and the reasons she sought freedom.
A Journey of Freedom
The Story of Harriet Tubman describes her childhood experiences that made her start longing for freedom at a young age. Beginning at 5 or 6 years old, she was put to work and expected to complete tasks far beyond what should be expected from a young child. Finally, she courageously escaped to freedom.
Harriet eventually became a ‘conductor’ on the Underground Railroad! Her bravery saved many lives, and kids will be inspired to learn more about this courageous hero.
In addition to the story, there quiz and reflection questions, writing prompts, and even a glossary at the end of the book.
The Story of Harriet Tubman is ideal for children in grades 3-6, ESL students, or older struggling readers.
