The Story of George Washington

A Biography Book for New Readers

The Story of George Washington: A Biography Book for New Readers is a colorfully illustrated introduction to this famous president. It is written simply, with short chapters and lots of sidebars and pictures. This book is just right for young readers who are ready to move beyond simple picture books.

Non-fiction is a wonderful genre for young readers. This biography of George Washington does an excellent job of covering his life and debunking some myths surrounding this historical figure. The book includes a timeline of Washington’s life events throughout the chapters.

A Story About Fighting for Independence

The Story of  George Washington examines the issues of slavery in the context of Washington’s life and time.

The author does a good job of explaining slavery in a way that young children can understand, while avoiding some of the harsher realities of slavery. This age-appropriate acknowledgement of the tragedy of human enslavement is a great conversation-starter.

In addition, there are some quiz and reflection questions at the end of the book. The author provides prompts for further exploring the question of “all men” being “created equal.”

The Story of  George Washington is ideal for children in grades 3-6, ESL students, or older struggling readers.

The publisher provided a copy of The Story of George Washington, but I was not required to write a review. These are my honest opinions about a resource that I use in my homeschool.
