A Reading Bible
The Message 100 Devotional Bible: The Story of God in Sequence is a Bible for reading. Pastor Eugene H. Peterson wrote this paraphrased version of the Bible in modern language in novel form to make the Word of God more accessible. It is like the difference between a textbook and a living book. Rather than reading for information or reference, with The Message, you read as if you are sitting down with a favorite novel and find yourself quickly immersed in story.
“Reading is the first thing, just reading the Bible. As we read we enter a new world of words and find ourselves in on a conversation in which God has the first and last words. We soon realize that we are included in the conversation. We didn’t expect this. But this is precisely what generation after generation of Bible readers do find: The Bible is not only written about us but to us. In these pages we become insiders to a conversation in which God uses words to form and bless us, to teach and guide us, to forgive and save us” (p. A9).
Divided into 100 sequential readings, The Message 100 is meant to be read at your own pace. The 100 readings are not 100 daily readings. They are simply divided this way to give you a sort of “chapter” of related content, each introduced with a short reflection: A Present Filled With Hope, Embracing God in the Worst of Times, Rediscovered Revelation, Leading by Getting Out of the Way.
I really enjoy the language of this Bible and how smooth and easy it is to read. While it doesn’t replace my traditional Bible, I find it to be a wonderful addition to my Bible library as it increases understanding and enjoyment of God’s Word. The Psalms are especially beautifully translated:
“Light, space, zest–
So, with him on my side I’m fearless,
afraid of no one and nothing” (p. 1247).
The only criticism I have of The Message 100 is that the font size is small and the pages are so thin that the print from the reverse side shows through, which makes it somewhat difficult for my old eyes to read. I like the paperback format and the beautiful artwork on the cover. It is sized nicely for carrying with you. I would especially recommend The Message 100 to anyone who finds reading the other Bible translations to be tedious or difficult to stick with. This one will get you reading, and enjoying, God’s story.
