Heather Avis’ transparency grabs you from page one of The Lucky Few: Finding God’s Best in the Most Unlikely Places and compels you to keep on reading. I was immediately drawn in with her honest and poignant writing style as she described her years of infertility, sharing her pain and struggles. She traveled a long and difficult road to motherhood under unusual circumstances, but her reliance on God kept her going along the path laid out for her. And, that is where her story really begins:
“But like most of the things God does, once we stepped into the craziness and confusion of the unknown and unplanned, we quickly realized that we were indeed among the lucky few.”
As Heather’s family grows through adoption, she shares the good and the painful, the joyous and the heart-wrenching aspects of their lives. She and her husband adopt a little girl with a myriad of health problems, and then another precious little girl, and then an adorable little boy. Along with their kids’ special needs, the Avis’ also juggle their birth families and various other challenges along the way.
Heather’s straight-from-the-heart style of story telling is like sitting in the room with her at times. Even if adoption, fostering, or dealing with special needs aren’t directly affecting your life, this book is a must-read. Parenthood doesn’t usually look like you dream it will, for anyone. The Lucky Few is inspirational and hopeful, and if you read it, you will surely be touched by it.
