My son’s favorite picture book when he was little was Corduroy by Don Freeman. The combination of a wonderful, loving story, and beautifully engaging illustrations drew him in and made him fall in love with the book we read over and over again. We went on to collect and read other Don Freeman classics, like Gregory’s Shadow, Norman the Doorman, and A Rainbow of My Own.
The Day is Waiting
It is such a treasure that Mr. Freeman’s widow collected his unpublished illustrations and made them available to his fans with the publication of The Day is Waiting with words by Linda Zuckerman.
As fans of Don Freeman, my kids and I immediately recognized Gregory, Norman, and Moppy, along with familiar scenes from many of his beloved stories. The Day is Waiting is a sweet story about a child’s journey into the world and all of its possibilities. In the vein of Don Freeman’s other books, The Day is Waiting is imaginative and optimistic, and it encompasses the childlike wonder and magic of Don Freeman’s world.
Recommended for read aloud time! (And, it would make a fun graduation gift.)
The publisher provided a review copy of The Day is Waiting.
