Biosphere: Shake, Rattle, and Roll . . .

March 5, 2011 by Anne Campbell 2 Comments

Biosphere Update: Day 36

We’ve been so careful not to move the Biosphere since we put it together. Until today. We have our biosphere on our nature shelf in the schoolroom, where we thought it would remain safely undisturbed. It’s a good location with no direct light, and so far, our hands-on project has been going well.

Our cat Crookshanks was trying to balance his big self on top of the frog tank (where he is not allowed) and decided to step on top of the jar when he tried to squeeze himself down behind the light on the tank. He is way bigger than he thinks he is, and he obviously got himself into a predicament. The jar slid, and the top flopped.

We panicked, but at least the jar didn’t break.

The top still has a clear layer of water across it, but the gel-like substance underneath is hanging down in the front. There are also some bubbles in the clear part, and the orangey film is kind of mixed up and swirly.

Will this be the end of the Biosphere? Stay tuned . . . Does science have a chance with a cat roaming around? He is not one bit concerned, either (troublemaker). It’s a good thing he’s so cute and lovable.

Dogs are almost equally terrible to experiments and learning.

We try to be strategic when looking for places to set up projects, but I guess one of the “perks” of homeschooling is getting the pets involved! I wouldn’t have it any other way, though.
