Rock Painting For Beginners: Simple Step-by-Step Techniques initially caught my interest at the beginning of summer. I thought it would be a fun way to start an activity with my kids and to inspire some creativity without spending a lot of money.

Walking and Gathering

Rock painting is something that we can do together indoors or out. Plus, finding the rocks to paint is a great nature walk activity! This book is so pretty and has lots of step-by-step techniques for painting, stenciling, decoupage, marbling, and other unique styles of decorating stones.

The author includes getting started tips, and pictures of the supplies needed for the different techniques.

Homeschool Art Class

I have added Rock Painting for Beginners to our list of curriculum resources for homeschool art class this year. I love that there is very little expense involved in these activities. In fact, we pretty much already have everything we need, except the rocks.

All you really need are a few different sizes of paintbrushes, a palette (a paper plate, or even a piece of recycled cardboard work well), and some acrylic paints in different colors.

Variety of Projects

There are also projects where you can use stamps, rub-ons, tape for masking techniques, and stencils. I raided my old stash of scrapbooking supplies and found some fun things to use for the tape-resist, mixed media, and transfer projects.

At first, it might seem like a no-brainer to paint a rock, but this book truly provides SO much inspiration and unique ideas. Rock painting might soon become an addiction in my house!

Note: the publisher provided a review copy, but I was not required to write a review. These are my honest opinions.
