Quality Father Son Time

June 16, 2015 by Anne Campbell 1 Comment

Activity Ideas for Fathers and Sons

We often forget to celebrate dads and all they do. Even when it’s not Father’s Day, there are many ways to show dads how much they are loved and appreciated that don’t involve the purchase of a new tie. I’d like to share some ideas for fathers and sons to encourage quality time.

Especially if Dad works long hours, it can be difficult to carve out time with his son, but spending time together doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. With three boys in our family at vastly different ages, we have found some easy ways for father/son time to happen in order to maintain a strong bond. All kids need time with their parents, and finding one-on-one opportunities is a wonderful way to keep in touch. No matter their age, sons should feel that their parents are their go-to source of information, and while maintaining the role as the authority figure, dads can also be their son’s friend. Simply hanging out together or doing an activity together helps keep that relationship strong.

So, here’s the GREAT BIG LIST OF FATHER and SON TIME IDEAS aka, things my sons enjoy doing with their dad that don’t cost much, except for #20. (P. S. Remember, you can do these things all year; don’t wait for Father’s Day):

  1. Throw a ball back-and-forth repeatedly.
  2. Shoot hoops.
  3. Go out for a coffee or milkshake.
  4. Take them along with you to the home improvement store. Look at all the shiny tools and project possibilities. Plan your dream treehouse.
  5. Grab a sleeping bag and go camping.
  6. Train for a 5K.
  7. Play poker.
  8. Yardwork. Something about trimming shrubs causes an endorphin rush.
  9. Watch football/baseball/basketball/hockey/soccer.
  10. Hit a bucket of balls.
  11. Take a hike.
  12. Read aloud to them.
  13. Putt-Putt
  14. Foosball
  15. Build a puzzle.
  16. Go fishing. Tell tall tales.
  17. Build something amazing with LEGOs or blocks.
  18. Eat meals together.
  19. Go on a road trip.
  20. Work on a project together. Click here to see what my crew made.

Whatever you decide to do, cherish each moment you have as a father and son!
