Deciding to Homeschool
The moment I decided to homeschool–watching him march down the hall and entering a door I wasn’t allowed to go through, his first day of K-5. I had begun thinking about homeschooling from the time he was born, but it seemed so huge and foreign to me–and so far away. When the first day of school arrived, much too soon, and I was standing behind the “No parents beyond this point” sign, I knew that my choice was made.
Even though I was very pregnant with our third child, we pulled our oldest out of school three weeks later and began homeschooling full force. Our middle son loved having his big brother back at home. With some good advice from a few veteran homeschooling moms, everything fell into place. It felt natural, and it felt right.
We were committed to homeschooling, but we decided to “take things a year at a time” and see how it went. Here we are, ten years later, and that little boy at the front of the line is starting high school–at home. There hasn’t been a doubt in my mind since that first day that this was the right thing for us to do.
This is time well-spent, and we still treasure every precious moment.
Where are you on your homeschooling journey? Are you just starting out, or have you been at it a while?
