Night of Great Joy

Setting the Stage for Christmas Joy

Mary Engelbreit’s A Night of Great Joy is a vibrant Christmas picture book that captures the joy of the holiday season for all ages.

From it’s sparkly book jacket to its brilliant illustrations, A Night of Great Joy beautifully tells the Christmas story. A children’s pageant sets the stage for the story of the birth of the Christ child. No detail is left behind, as even the text font adds to the look of the story with it’s pennant letters and green and red color scheme.

A Wondrous Night

Fans of Mary Engelbreit will immediately recognize her signature style in the illustrations. The vintage look and wonderfully expressive characters are enhanced with tiny details for young readers to find. The story of Mary and Joseph’s wondrous night is retold, as the multicultural children reenact the story with props like stuffed animals and fishing poles:

“The world was silent. And most everyone was fast asleep. What seemed like an ordinary night –with the moon and the stars shining brightly overhead–would become a night like no other.”

A Night of Great Joy is recommended for kids ages 4-8, but I think it will prove to delight readers of all ages as it becomes a classic to revisit each year. As a longtime admirer of Mary Engelbreit’s work, I will be one adult reader of this book again and again, (but I will also share it with my kids).

The publisher provided a review copy of A Night of Great Joy.
