Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2018 (1/27/18) is its fifth year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness on the ongoing need to include kid’s books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.

Author Susan Schaefer Bernardo and illustrator Courtenay Fletcher met in a local Mommy and Me class 12 years ago when their kids were tots. They indie published their first book Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs together in 2012 to reassure children coping with loss and separation — now they are a dynamic duo committed to creating books to heal and inspire children of all ages!
Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs is a timeless picture book with a powerful message: love is forever. It’s a wonderful bedtime book for any child, but especially helpful for children grieving a loss or coping with separation anxiety for any reason (divorce, deployment, foster care, etc). Soothing, lyrical text and heartwarming illustrations portray a diverse spectrum of children, engaged in joyful activities in nature.
The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm In 2014, they collaborated with LeVar Burton (Roots, Reading Rainbow, Star Trek) on a picture book to help children cope with trauma and turbulent emotions. The Rhino book is a valuable resource for families, therapists and Child Life specialists, and has been read aloud by Michelle Obama. It was also sent via rocket to the International Space Station for an innovative STEAM program called Storytime from Space.
The Big Adventures of Tiny HouseTheir latest picture book tells the story of Tiny, an old farmhouse that is recycled into a tiny house on wheels and sets off across America. It’s a celebration of the meaning of home – and following your heart to a life that is big and amazing…no matter what size or shape you are.
Over 500 diverse book reviewers will be publishing their book reviews between now and the 27th so watch for them on social media (follow the #ReadYourWorld hashtag!). The Big Giant Linky will be live on 1/27 (on the MCBD website) and will ultimately be a giant and in-depth diverse book resource.
