Kids Closet Organization

January 28, 2013 by Anne Campbell Leave a Comment

This is what happens when two brothers share a room and one closet, and the Build-a-Bears have more clothes than the boys do, and legos outnumber the carpet fibers, and there are enough Star Wars figures to take over our planet.I think Mayhem is hiding in there somewhere, too. The boys and I emptied their closet, rearranged, organized, and purged, until they can actually open the door without an avalanche occurring.

We’ve finally emerged with an organized boys’ closet, and not only did we all survive, but they both agree that it is much easier to find what they are looking for and it looks a lot better. When two kids have to share a closet, it quickly gets cluttered and crowded.

Before: 2 Boys, 1 Closet

Sorting it all out

The best part . . . I didn’t purchase one single thing. We just rearranged what was already there, and we filled up the back of my car with bags for the consignment store and for donating. One big difference was moving the shelves and cubbies to the center of the closet and folding all of their clothes so the “hanging” area on the sides was clear, making it easier for them to reach the shelves on the sides of the closet.

Bigger brother’s clothes are up higher, and little brother can now reach all of his, so he doesn’t have to climb to get them, or throw them to put them away (such a huge improvement in organization). I used carabiners to hang backpacks and belts and even found a place to put shoes. The rolling drawer unit holds all the sorted Build-a-Bear clothes. Each boy has a cubbie for play clothes, and the extra one has “dress-up” costumes. Daddy even hung hooks inside the doors for their bathrobes, which usually ended up on the floor.

There are two high shelves, and the top one is lined with storage boxes, which I labeled with large stickers so the boys know where everything is. Since it is so high, we put things up there that they wanted to keep, but that they don’t play with much. They also each have one “junk box” to put random stuff in.

The closet was so out-of-control before, and once Christmas came and went, it was mayhem. Luckily, this closet has double doors, so it opens up wide, and each brother has his own side.

Now, if only it can stay like this . . .
