Easy Seed Starting
Gardening with kids offers so many rewards and benefits. It connects them to the food they eat and can entice them to try new things that they’ve grown themselves. It also teaches them patience as they await that first seedling popping up out of the soil.
We are doing some garden chemistry–the boys started their seedlings for the garden using the Burpee Seed Starting Greenhouse Kits. Each of the boys chose a pack of seeds to plant: they planted jalapenos, cucumbers, and carrots, and I planted a tray of tomatoes.
The little greenhouse kits come with little compacted “tablets” of soil in a tray, which makes gardening with kids even easier. First you add warm water to the tray, then you watch and wait as the soil tablets magically absorb the water and expand to fill the tray. The boys had great fun with this as their soil magically grew and grew.
Then, you just snap on the clear lid, and set them somewhere warm to “cook.” The humidity builds up pretty quickly, so they stay moist for days. We are checking them daily for signs of life and misting them using a water bottle sprayer about once or twice a week.
The boys are already asking when their plants will grow and can’t wait to get started tracking their growth.
