Making Today Matter
Do you ever have time in your day to carve out five minutes of peace? If you’re a mom, that question probably makes you chuckle. It doesn’t matter how old your kids are, finding a little bit of time for peace and quiet can be a challenge.
Sheila Walsh’s 5 Minutes with Jesus is a great antidote for “too-busy-itis.” This little book of devotions is an easy guide to carving out 5 minutes of time each day to refocus and allow God to speak to us. Each chapter is short and concise, yet full of wisdom and encouragement.
Can’t you relate to topics like:
- noise
- rest
- purpose
- shame
- wanting to quit?
I certainly can. As a busy working mom, the noise and busyness are always in competition with my desire to spend some quiet time reflecting, refocusing, and feeling nourished.
Some of my favorite takeaways from 5 Minutes with Jesus are:
- Learn to see others with love and acceptance, just as Jesus did–“the ground at the foot of the cross is even” (p. 178).
- Be honest. If you are angry, God knows it. Don’t feel that you have to hold back–He loves you. “Truth destroys walls” (p. 10).
- Keep on keeping on. “Thinking of all Christ has done for us can help us take a deep breath and keep on running” (p. 106).
Spending a simple few minutes with 5 Minutes with Jesus has enriched my days in ways far beyond the pages of this book. Starting the morning with words of encouragement and reflecting on them throughout the day really help keep me going, as well as improving my outlook and attitude. Yes, 5 minutes of time is definitely worth spending for a day’s worth of peace.

I understand how it is to be a busy mom! I will check out this book – thanks for the suggestion!
I think one of the most important things moms need to do is take time for themselves, yet I fail at this miserably. I like the idea of setting aside and taking five minutes a day to reflect and refocus. That’s a manageable amount of time for sure! Thanks for sharing!
I try to start off my day with a good quiet time. But you are so right, that busy-itis creeps in far too often! Thanks for reviewing this devotional!
Thanks for sharing, Laura!
Sometimes I just want peace and quiet and go to the bathroom on my own. I have to remember these for the moments I just want to pull my hair out
LOL–Hang in there, Mama! 🙂
Sounds as if this book is a great motivator to get started with a daily quiet time with God. I appreciate your review! Thanks!
Thank you, Michelle!
I have not been spending as much time in prayer and reading lately as I need to. This must make my goals list for next week!
I’m also going to make it a priority, Jamie. Thanks so much for stopping by!
