Cooking with New Southern Table

November 12, 2015 by Anne Campbell 8 Comments

Southern Cooking with a Modern Twist

Whitney Miller’s New Southern Table: My Favorite Family Recipes with a Modern Twist, written by the first season winner of MasterChef, takes Southern hospitality to a whole new level with delicious twists on traditional Southern fare. Combining traditional Southern flavors in new ways with international cultural flavors Whitney discovered from her global travels, New Southern Table is a truly unique cookbook.

One feature I really like about New Southern Table is the way Whitney writes an introduction to each recipe, so you have a little bit of a frame of reference and a little bit of inside knowledge about each one. Her personal family stories and histories add a nice touch and make the book more than just a cookbook, but also highly readable. The ingredients lists are set off in orange type, so it’s easy to plan and get a list together.

While there are tons of photos and most of the recipes are pictured, I would like all the recipes to be shown. I am a visual learner and cook, so it helps me to see what a dish is “supposed” to look like. For dishes like Potato Gnocchi, I would like to see more. There is a wide variety in this cookbook, including several dishes using venison, a homemade ricotta cheese recipe, even dishes with a Middle Eastern flair. Of course, being a Southern cookbook, fried chicken is a must, and Whitney’s take of Mississippi Fried Chicken (using boneless breasts) is simply delicious.

Whitney Miller’s New Southern Table: My Favorite Family Recipes with a Modern Twist covers it all: breakfast, snacks, soups, salads, sandwiches, sides, sweets, and big meals like Sunday dinner and family suppers. If you are intrigued by Southern cooking and want to try it with a modern twist, you will enjoy New Southern Table as much as I do. Be sure not to miss the Sweet Corn Grits!

I am totally with you on the visuals for each recipe. I actually don’t normally purchase any cookbooks that don’t have a photo for each recipe. I like knowing how the dish is somewhat supposed to look, and it also helps me quickly decide whether or not I want to make it.

I’m like you – I prefer to see a photo of a recipe so I can get an idea of what it is.
The story ahead of the recipe will surely make the recipes seem like they belong to someone near, like a grandma.

Like you, I prefer to see pictures with every recipe but I am super excited about the fried chicken recipe since I prefer to use boneless, skinless breasts whenever I make chicken. Can’t wait to check out the other recipes!

I like cookbooks that add personal stories and especially photos. If there’s no photo, I’ll probably never make it as I flip through and pick what looks good.
