A Black History Book for Kids
These bold stories about black women in the field of science and mathematics are inspiring and make it easy to include diverse materials in your home or classroom. Black Women in Science: A Black History Book for Kids features 15 African American women who made major contributions to the field of science. This chapter book is a great resource for kids in grades 4-6.
Black Women in Science As Role Models
Each chapter features a female scientist, inluding doctors, engineers, mathematicians, and other groundbreaking discoverers in the field of STEM. Many kids have probably never even heard of these women, which makes this book vitally important for everyone. These women are role models as well as deserving more recognition in school text books. Ask a child to name a famous scientist. What names are usually the answer? Probably not a woman, and probably not a person of color.
This book is not just for African American history studies. All kids of all colors should learn about these contributions. This book is easy to read and engaging. The author even includes a suggestion at the end of each chapter for active projects kids can try, related to the person they’ve just read about.
I wish the book also included a reference page or timeline that listed the scientist’s name along with what they’re known for. You have to read the chapters to find out what each women did in the fields of math and science. This book contains a glossary at the end, which defines some terms kids may not understand. I hope to see more books like this added to school library shelves.
