Art Collage Project for Teens

October 13, 2014 by Anne Campbell Leave a Comment

Creating an art collage is a fun activity for teens. They can express their thoughts creatively through collage art, and collages are a fun way to add another element to their studies. Use a collage to explore the themes of a novel or poem, Highlight a time from history through your artwork. There are innumerable ways collage art can be done.

This project is fun for all ages with modifications. See what materials you can find around the house and in the mailbox for this inexpensive art activity.

Creating an art collage can be a great pre-writing activity for all ages, and don’t forget that teens can benefit from hands-on activities, too!

Creating an Art Collage About You

Creating an art collage can be a great pre-writing activity for all ages, and don’t forget that teens can benefit from hands-on activities, too! My teen sons especially enjoy creating collages from found objects. This activity can be used to explore a theme or even to “report” on a book.

What is an art collage?

A collage is a form of mixed-media art in which pieces are combined to express an idea or theme. Pieces can be cut out of magazines, newspapers, photographs, or even other artwork, and can also include materials such as fabric, wood, metal, and items from nature.

You will need:

  • found objects and pictures
  • poster board, heavy cardstock, or cardboard
  • glue

Decide on a theme for your collage: Who are you? Where do you live? What is important to you? What are your interests?

  1. Include both images and words to convey your theme.
  2. Arrange and rearrange items before gluing them down.
  3. Give your collage a title.

You could even use the completed collage as a writing prompt for your autobiography, or make a smaller one to include in your scrapbook. Have fun creating!

What kinds of hands-on projects do you incorporate into your lessons?
