ABCs of Homeschooling Through the Holidays

December 9, 2015 by Anne Campbell 6 Comments

Homeschooling through the holidays can be a fun and meaningful journey for your family as you put the formal lesson plans aside and focus on the true meaning of the season. This is what the third annual ABCs of Homeschooling Through the Holidays series is all about: sharing ideas, resources, and encouragement with fellow homeschooling families to make the very most out of the beauty of the Christmas season.

Join us November 16-December 21, as 36 bloggers blog their way through the alphabet bringing you different resources and ideas for embracing homeschooling during the holidays!

“R” is for Reading through the Holidays

During the holiday season, I switch out our regular homeschool reading selections for holiday-themed books. Beginning around mid-November, I pull out some old and new favorites to use for our daily read aloud time. The library is a wonderful resource for finding holiday themed books, and our bookmobile even has a special shelf for them when they come around, so it’s super easy to put together a holiday collection. I pile our holiday choices in a basket, but if you’re really motivated, you could wrap each book like a gift and have kids open one each day leading up to Christmas, like a countdown calendar.

Seasonal reading is lots of fun! I love getting the Christmas books out and enjoying them with the kids all over again.

This year we’re not doing too much for homeschooling in December, just a little most days (not that I don’t ‘sneak’ a little learning in during other activities occasionally, too).

I’m heading over to read more, I’d love to see how you work through the holidays.

I love the picture of your young man reading. I love a love of reading and YES, the library is AWESOME. My kids have been asking to go. I used to do the library all the time before I switched to reading on my Kindle but my kids’ books are over running the house right now!

We love reading holiday themed books during December too. It is just a little more magic and cheer!

I still make my daughter (who isn’t homeschooled) read and do some educational activities through her holiday break. It’s important to always keep kids learning through fun activities. Luckily, she LOVES to read, so it’s not difficult to convince her!

I love that you change up the books with the season; it will keep the kids engaged. And some of the holiday books are just beautifully written.
